Finding a Gas Safe heating engineer
Everybody on this page has shown us a Gas Safe registration card, along with photo identification and a public liability insurance certificate. We check them, note the expiry dates and delete the documents. There is no version of this list that includes somebody without the card, because working on gas appliances without registration is a criminal offence rather than a matter of preference.
The card is also worth checking yourself, and it takes a minute. Every registered engineer carries one with a licence number and a list of the work they are qualified for, and the register at gassaferegister.co.uk will confirm both. An engineer registered for boilers is not necessarily registered for cookers or commercial catering equipment.

Is it illegal to work on gas without being registered?
Yes. Anybody carrying out work on gas fittings or appliances must be on the Gas Safe Register, and doing so without registration is a criminal offence. It is the one qualification in the trades that is not a matter of opinion.
How do I check somebody on the Gas Safe Register?
Ask for the card, then search the licence number or the business name at gassaferegister.co.uk. Check the expiry date and the categories on the back cover the work you are asking for — a card for boilers does not cover a gas cooker.
Who services a boiler, a plumber or a heating engineer?
A heating engineer with gas registration. A plumber can work on the water side of a heating system — radiators, pipework, valves — but anything touching the gas supply or the appliance itself needs the card.
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Once a year is the usual manufacturer requirement, and most warranties depend on it. Landlords have a separate legal duty: a gas safety check on every appliance and flue every twelve months, carried out by a registered engineer, with a record given to the tenant.
