Billing, trials and cancelling

Free trials

Monthly plans start with a three-day free trial. You will not be charged during it, and cancelling before it ends costs nothing at all.

Yearly plans do not have a trial, deliberately. A three-day trial on a charge of £59 or £129 means anyone who forgets is billed a year up front on day four, and we would rather not build that. If you want to try before committing to a year, take the monthly plan and switch when you are sure.

A card is needed to start a trial, because the subscription begins automatically when the trial ends. We email you the day before that happens — a three-day trial cannot have a three-day warning — with the amount and the date.

Renewals

Subscriptions renew automatically — monthly or yearly, whichever you chose. We email you three days before each renewal, with the amount and the date.

A trial is different. A three-day trial cannot have a three-day warning, so we email you the day before it ends and the first payment is taken.

We send that reminder because being surprised by a charge is a poor way to find out you forgot to cancel, and we would rather you cancelled deliberately than disputed a payment.

Cancelling

You can cancel at any time, from your account page. It takes one click and there is nothing to ring up about.

When you cancel:

  • You are not charged again.
  • You keep full access until the end of the period you have already paid for. If you cancel a week into a month, you keep the remaining three weeks.
  • Nothing is deleted. Your saved areas and followed postcodes stay, and resubscribing picks up where you left off.

Refunds

Your 14-day right to cancel

You have a legal right to cancel within 14 days of subscribing, for any reason at all, including simply changing your mind. This comes from the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 and applies to anything bought at a distance, including this.

To use it, tell us within 14 days — a message is enough, you do not need a reason. We refund to the original payment method within 14 days of being told.

One thing to know: if you ask us to start the service immediately — which is what happens the moment you search a postcode on a paid plan — we may keep a proportionate amount for the days you used. In practice, on a £5.99 monthly plan, that is pence.

After the first 14 days

We do not refund the period you are already in. That is why your access continues to the end of it rather than stopping the moment you cancel — you have paid for that time and you keep it.

If something has gone wrong — you were charged twice, or charged after cancelling, or the service was unavailable for a meaningful period — tell us and we will put it right, whenever it happened. That is separate from the policy above and is not limited to 14 days.

Changing plan

One rule covers every switch: moving to something more expensive takes effect immediately and you are charged the difference pro rata; moving to something cheaper takes effect at your next renewal, so you keep what you already paid for until then.

That applies to monthly and yearly the same way. Monthly to yearly starts now and credits the unused part of your month. Yearly to monthly starts when the year you have paid for runs out — we do not refund the remainder, for the same reason we do not refund any period already paid.

Payment methods and receipts

We accept card through Stripe, and PayPal and GoCardless where those are switched on. Whichever you choose, payment is taken on that provider's own secure page — your card details never reach MoveCompass and we could not store them if we wanted to.

A receipt is emailed after every payment. On your bank statement the charge appears as MOVECOMPASS or as your payment provider's name, depending on the method used.

Prices shown include VAT where it applies.

If we change a price

A price rise never applies to you automatically. Your subscription keeps the price it started at for as long as you stay on that plan — a new price applies to new subscribers, and to you only if you choose to switch plans.

If we ever need to change the price of a plan somebody is already on, we will email at least 30 days beforehand, and you can cancel before it takes effect.

What happens when you drop to Free

Nothing is deleted, and nothing is taken away permanently:

  • Saved areas. The free plan shows three. If you saved ten, all ten are kept — you see the three most recent and the rest reappear the moment you resubscribe.
  • Alerts. They stop being sent, and stay switched on. Resubscribing starts them again without you setting anything up.
  • Vehicles. Same: the free plan shows one, the rest are kept.
  • Search history. Untouched.

We could delete the overflow and free up a row of database. We do not, because somebody who resubscribes after a gap should not have to rebuild a list they already made.

Cancelling if you cannot sign in

Cancelling normally takes one click in your account. If you cannot get in — a lost email address, say — write to us from any address and tell us the email the account uses. We will cancel it and confirm by reply. We will never make you sign in to stop paying us.

You can also cancel directly with your payment provider, and we will honour it — though telling us as well means we can close the account tidily rather than discovering it through a failed charge.

Discount codes

Where an offer gives a period free or discounted, the normal price applies once that period ends. The end date is stated when you subscribe and again in the reminder email, and you can cancel before it without paying anything.

Failed payments

If a payment fails, Stripe retries it over a few days and emails you. If it keeps failing the subscription ends and you return to the free tier. Nothing is deleted, and you can resubscribe whenever you like.
