“Good transport links” is the emptiest phrase in a property listing, and it is in almost all of them.
It survives because it cannot be wrong. A bus stop four streets away is a transport link. So is a railway station you can see from the bedroom window that runs one train an hour and none after seven. So is a tram stop on a line that goes to the retail park rather than to your office. Nobody is lying when they write it. It just tells you nothing you can plan around.
The commute is the part of a move people get wrong most often, and it is the part that is hardest to undo. You can repaint a room, replace a boiler, learn to live with a small kitchen. You cannot move the station. And unlike most of what you are buying, the cost is paid daily, in the one currency nobody has spare.
Here is what to check instead, and how to check it in a few minutes.
Start with the stop, not the station
The first question is not “is there a station nearby”. It is which stops are actually within walking distance of this address — all of them, of every kind.
This matters more than it sounds. People searching a new area think in terms of the one station they have heard of. What actually determines the daily experience is the full set of options within walking distance: the rail station, yes, but also the bus stops, the tram stop, the coach pick-up, the cycle hire dock. Two of those together often beat one of them alone, because the second one is what you use when the first is cancelled.
The transport tool lists every station and stop around a postcode — rail, underground, tram, bus, coach, ferry, taxi ranks and cycle hire — with the walking time to each.
One caveat we would rather state than bury: those walking times are estimates from straight-line distance, not measured routes. A stop 400 metres away across a railway cutting is a fifteen-minute walk, not a five-minute one. Use the number to rank the options, then look at the map before you trust it.
Then ask what actually calls there
A stop is a piece of street furniture. What matters is what stops at it.
This is the single most common commuting mistake: assuming that because there is a station, it goes where you need to go. Plenty of stations are on a branch that terminates at a town you have no reason to visit. Plenty of bus stops serve one route that loops the estate.
So the second check is which services call at each stop — the actual route numbers and line names. On the transport tool these are listed against each stop, so you can see at a glance whether the nearest station is on a main line or a spur, and whether the bus outside the door goes towards the city or away from it.
That single check kills more shortlisted addresses than anything else, and it takes about ten seconds.
Check step-free access if you will ever need it
Step-free matters to far more people than those who identify as needing it: anyone with a pushchair, a suitcase, a bad knee, a heavy shop, or a temporary injury. A station with a footbridge and no lift is a different station in February with a toddler than it is on the viewing day in June.
Where the data records it, we show it. Where it does not, we say nothing rather than guess — an absent tag means nobody has recorded it, not that the station has steps.
The three things nobody checks until they have moved
The last one home. Frequency at eight in the morning tells you about the commute. The last departure tells you about your life. A line with four trains an hour that stops at 22:40 quietly ends your evenings in the city, and you will not discover it until the first time you stay out.
Sundays and engineering work. Many lines run a materially different Sunday service, and weekend engineering closures land on the same stretches year after year. If you will use the line at weekends, look at a Sunday timetable, not a Tuesday one.
The interchange. A journey with one change is not twice as complicated as a direct one, it is considerably worse than that — because a delay on the first leg becomes a missed connection on the second, and the failure compounds. Two direct options in different directions beat one faster route that depends on a four-minute interchange.
We do not hold timetables, and will not pretend to. For how often a service runs, when the last one leaves, and what happens on a Sunday, go to the operator’s own timetable. What we can tell you is which operators and routes to go and look up, which is the part that is genuinely tedious to work out from scratch.
Do it for the shortlist, not the favourite
The useful version of this exercise is comparative. Checking the transport around the house you have already fallen for is confirmation, and confirmation is easy to find. Checking three postcodes side by side is where the surprise lives — and the surprise is usually that the address with the worse photographs has the better morning.

A five-minute version
What this does not tell you
Our transport data comes from OpenStreetMap, which is contributed by volunteers and is very good in most of the country and patchy in a few places. A missing stop is possible. A stop that closed last year and has not been removed is possible. We name the source on the tool for exactly this reason: if a stop matters to your decision, it is worth thirty seconds confirming it exists.
We also do not know how you travel, whether you would cycle it, or whether the walk that looks fine in September looks fine in January. No dataset knows that. What the data can do is narrow six possibilities to two, honestly, in an afternoon — and leave the judgement where it belongs.
Conclusion
“Good transport links” is a phrase written by someone selling a building. What you are actually buying is a specific set of stops, served by specific routes, running at specific times, from one specific front door.
All of that is public, checkable, and takes minutes rather than a weekend. The only reason people do not check it is that the information is scattered across an operator site, a map, a timetable PDF and a bus company’s route list — and nobody has time for that on six addresses.
